about

Press following the release of ‘Time for a Change’:

'The playing is a joy throughout from all the members, tones change, it is like a musical kaleidoscope in variety, a stunning and entertaining debut' Blues Matters

This quartet has created a remarkably original sounding blues album. Recorded live with a vibrant urgency, these songs lurch thrillingly from one thumping groove to the next' The Musician

'If you want your blues modern, packed with original songs and delivered with sassy vocals then 'Time for a Change' has a bluesy feel that has been set free from the shackles of music that has gone before..it makes you want to go out and see the band perform live'.
Blues in Britain

‘This is a very modern blues album....it’s fresh, vibrant and full of attack’
The Blues Man in The Hat

Radio Vera, Ireland

'Brilliant album, I really like that, they're really, really very good'
Radio Cardiff

‘Now here is something a bit different for you this is an incredibly fresh sound, the enthusiasm and vibrance that this band bring, is hard to ignore'
Blues and Soul Show

'A really fine album of modern blues songs'
North Cornwall Radio

'A very good album that’s worth buying' Phill The Music Quill

Debut album 'Time for a Change' charted in the IBBA (Independent British Blues Broadcasters) Top 10

'The launch of Time for a Change was always going to be a great night – the band have honed their blues chops over numerous live gigs – and the early release of I Dare You as the lead tune suggested the LP was going to be a scorcher. But the gig itself exceeded expectations, with guest appearances, a jiving audience and nearly two hours of sizzling blues... So what should we conclude from the launch? Well, the LP is worthy of your hard earned cash, the band are the best dressed blues outfit this side of Vintage Trouble and you should be nagging your local venues to put the Tones on stage before the rest of the country catches on and they disappear off on a monster tour'.
Bristol 24/7

Album of the week on Joe Singleton's show 'A really good collection of tunes'
Blues Bonaza

Bristol-based blues band Husky Tones’ debut album Time for a Change is a blistering and inventive collection of modern blues songs. The album features singer/drummer Victoria Bourne. In it’s month of release (October) it charted at number 10 in the Independent Blues Broadcasters Chart. Time for a Change comprises ten original blues songs covering a variety of themes from the highly personal (failed marriage, criminal ancestry) to the universal (struggling to pay bills, fighting against bad luck).

Time for a Change was written between September 2014 and May 2015 and was recorded between May 2015 and August 2015 with very few overdubs: Victoria Bourne’s main vocal and drum parts are recorded simultaneously on all tracks, so as to capture the energy of the Husky Tones’ live shows. The project was self-financed through music teaching, choir leading and Husky Tones performances.

Described as ‘Seriously on their way up’ (Blues and Soul Show) they have been thrilling audiences live with prestigious gigs including headlining at London’s 100 Club, the Ain’t Nothin’ But Club, The Blues Kitchen future gigs include for Solid Entertainment Harpenden and Ilfracombe Blues Festivals, the first international Sisters of Blues and Soul Festival and Tenby blues festival.

Track Name: I'm So Happy I've Got the Blues
I’m so happy yeah I’ve got the blues (so damn happy)
I’m so happy yeah oh I’ve got the blues (so damn happy)
Life is so much easier, when you’ve got nothing to lose

Lost my job
Lost my phone
Lost my keys
Lost my home
Lost my Kindle
Lost my Mac
I lost everything I had
But I’m so happy yeah I’ve got the blues (so damn happy)
Life is so much easier, when you’ve got nothing to lose

Lost my style
Lost my look
Lost my mind
Lost my hook
Lost my cool
Lost my rag
I lost everything I had
But I’m so happy yeah I’ve got the blues (so damn happy)
Life is so much easier, when you’ve got nothing to lose

Lost my heart
To a man
Turned my life
Upside down
Gave a gift
Of his heart
To be mine
Never part
Our love was deep
Our love was dark
Precious soul
Gentle heart
But my luck
Stayed the same
I lost my mind
Once again
Had love’s soul
In my hand
And guess what
I lost it!
But I’m so damn happy yeah I’ve got the blues (so damn happy)
Life is so much easier, when you’ve got nothing to lose

I’m so happy yeah I’ve got the blues (so damn happy)
Oh I’m so happy yeah I’ve got the blues (so damn happy)
Life is so much easier, now I’ve nothing to lose
Track Name: I Dare You
I dare you
To change your lousy ways
I dare you
To change your lousy ways
If you don’t change something soon I can see a tom cat…
Getting spayed

How dare you
Treat me the way you do
How dare you
Treat me the way you do
One of your nine lives is in danger ’cause I’ll soon be…
Through with you

I see you
Cats’ eyes glow in the dark
I see you
Cats’ eyes glow in the dark
Good to hide from me ’cause my bite is sure worse…
Than my bark

Well, slow down honey
Slow down
Curl up next to me
Can you make me purr once again
What’s the matter boy?
Cat got your tongue?
What a shame
Then you ain’t gonna be able to do
What needs to be done

Get back here
With your tail between your legs
Get back here
With your tail between your legs
I can see you wondering was it something…
That you said

What scares you
Ain’t got nothing on me
What scares you
Ain’t got nothing on me
’Cause if I bare my claws I’m gonna turn you from a…
He to a she
Track Name: Uncle Walter
Uncle Walter he was doing just fine
He had himself a mean little line
Forging, stealing, perhaps wife beatin’

Maybe because he was poor
He fell foul of the law

Seven years for stealin’
That would crush anyone’s feelin’s
But this is 1870, down under he must go

Maybe because he was poor
He fell foul of the law

Alwick Castle was his prison at sea
And if he made an attempt to flee
Officer Williamson watched over him

Maybe because he was poor
He fell foul of the law

In Adelaide he freed himself
Discovering some new found wealth
Coats and trousers, stamps and money

Up to his old tricks again
He fell foul of the law

Spotted, caught and apprehended
Williamson made sure it ended
Because he carried on a-stealing

Up to his old tricks again
He fell foul of the law
Track Name: Shelter
Tell me why I feel
More alone with you
Than when there’s no one around

There’s more empathy
In one already
Six feet under the ground

I’m with you now, yet,
Suspended somehow
Still I hear you through the mud

But when I speak
You play hide and seek
Is this water or blood?

When I feel my soul has been torn out
I turn to the one I love
Taking shelter at times like these
In the arms of the one I love

You know I still feel
More alone with you
Than when there’s no one around

An’ sometimes it seems
That the loudest screams
Make the quietest sound

But this flowering bud
Will grow through that mud
Its perfume dispersing above

But your closed mind
Will keep you blind
From the one that you could love

When I feel my soul has been torn out
I turn to the one I love
Taking shelter at times like these
In the arms of the one I love
Track Name: Fortune Seeker
I heard fortune favours the brave
Will I find my fortune ’fore I find my grave?
I’ve been courageous, thrown caution to the wind
But for my best efforts alive I’ve been skinned

I don’t need to hear you only live once
You die once too an’ that’s my grievance
I don’t need much to make me smile
I seek fortune not a fortune, and love, at least for a while

Oh I won’t give up
No I won’t give up
I can’t give up

I don’t care if I’m immune to good luck
I’ll seek my fortune till my days are all up
I’m gonna count my lack of lucky stars
Only once I’ve spent my life in dimly lit bars

You won’t catch me giving up
It takes more to stop me than a lack of good luck
There’s still so much that I need to do
I’ll seek my fortune till my days are all through

Oh I won’t give up
No I won’t give up
I can’t give up

You’re close, so close I can hear your breath
I believe, I’ve always believed in life before death
I’ll keep playing, playing on this not so merry-go-round
A bounty hunter, soldier of fortune, ignoring your sound

So here I am making my own luck
Put enough good around, the bad’ll come unstuck
I’ll learn to give all the things that I need
And forget about anything coming back to me

Oh I won’t give up
No I won’t give up
I can’t give up
Track Name: It's a Bitter Love with You Every Time
With a smile and a drink
You seduced me to think
You were my kind of man
Now I can say
If all that liquor hadn't got in the way
I’d never have given you the time

The next day
I could see in your gaze
The devil made your smile come alive
You comforted me
Told me everything would be fine
Then gave me a glass full of wine

How could I know that a year to the day
You’d tell me you never loved me anyway
You’d say “don’t touch me”, “don’t hold me”, then you’d cry
And never explain the reason why
When I left, you said it was a crime
It was a bitter love with you every time

Now I can see
Oh so clearly
The drink made your smile come alive
Now I won’t make
The same mistake
’Cause it was a bitter love with you every time
Track Name: Give Me Love
What’s wrong with this picture?
I’ll tell you what’s wrong
Something’s missing
I said something’s missing
You gotta give me love
Give me love

Give me love (You gotta give me love)
Give me love (You gotta give me love)

When love is good
Oh it’s so damn good
And when I’m with you lover
You make me shiver all over
I said when I’m with you lover
You make me shiver all over
Come and give me love
Give me love

Give me love (You gotta give me love)
Give me love (You gotta give me love)

When you go away
And I’m on my own
You know I know how to play
And it’s good so good
On my own with the thought of you
Oh I quiver yes I quiver
As you give me love
Give me love

Give me love (You gotta give me love)
Give me love (You gotta give me love)
Give me love (You gotta give me love)
Give me love (You gotta give me love)
Track Name: Rent Party
It’s getting to that time again
And I don’t seem to have a dime again
Gonna see if my friends can help me out

When I’m feeling as low as my income
I start to scream and shout
Oh I need someone to help me out

Gonna have a rent party
’Cause I can’t pay my bills no more
Gonna have a rent party
Just leave what you can in the jar by the door

Every month I get this sinking feeling
I call it feeling the pinch
And I know the landlord won’t give an inch

When I feel the net tightening
And I’m wondering how this’ll end
I just remember it pays to have good friends

Gonna have a rent party
’Cause I can’t pay my bills no more
Gonna have a rent party
Just leave what you can in the jar by the door

Gotta keep that wolf from my door
I can hear him scratching at my door
Oh I need a rent party ’cause I can’t pay my bills no more

Gonna have a rent party
’Cause I can’t pay my bills no more
Gonna have a rent party
Just leave what you can in the jar by the door

So I’m gonna get my friends together
Just like they used to do
Give generously ’cause next month it could be you
Track Name: Time for a Change
You know those times when your heart is sinking more than you can believe
And once again you find your lover is absent without leave
When it seems your future is always in the firing range
Well maybe, just maybe, it’s time for a change

It’s time for a change (It’s time for a change)
It’s time for a change (It’s time for a change)
It’s time for a change (It’s time for a change)

If you find yourself wondering why you can’t ever sleep at night
And you’re reaching for the top but you know if you get there you’ll be afraid of heights
When you wonder if things are gonna always be this strange
Goddamn! It sure is time for, it’s time for a change

It’s time for a change (It’s time for a change)
It’s time for a change (It’s time for a change)
It’s time for a change (It’s time for a change)

When you get up from the wrong bed let alone the wrong side
And it’s time for your public performance but all you want to do is hide
When you notice your lover’s face has gone from kind to deranged
Well you know goddamn for sure it’s time for a change

It’s time for a change (It’s time for a change)
It’s time for a change (It’s time for a change)
It’s time for a change (It’s time for a change)
